Why Healthy Diabetic Snacks Are So Important

 

Diabetes is a serious condition which affects millions of people all over the world.  It exists when the body fails to produce or use insulin which converts foods, sugars, starches into usable energy.  Genetics, poor eating habits, and lack of exercise are major contributing factors why people develop this disease.  To prevent or control diabetes, an individual must eat the right diet and engage in daily physical activities.

A typical diabetic diet would always include a well-balanced meal plan which would stop blood sugar also known as glucose from spiking or dropping too low.  As such, snacks for diabetics would normally have low sugar content.  In addition, the diabetic snacks would have less simple carbohydrates which are converted into sugar in the liver.

People who suffer from this disorder are expected to eat diabetic friendly snacks throughout the day to avoid complications.  However, it doesn’t mean that people with diabetes always have to end up eating bland diabetic snacks.  Upon consultation with a dietitian, flavorful healthy diabetic snacks can be planned and consumed daily.  To help you know more about the ideal diabetic snack, here are some guidelines:

  • Diabetics must carefully track the amount of carbohydrates they consume.  According to the American Diabetes Association (ADA), a diabetic can consume 6 to 11 servings of carbohydrates per day.  Diabetic snack foods with low amounts of carbohydrates can include whole grain crackers, popcorn, cereal, rice cakes, and the likes.
  • Diabetic snack recipes must have low fat but high fiber, vitamins, and minerals.  As such, fresh fruits and vegetables are good snack options.  ADA recommends 2 to 4 servings of fruits and 3 to 5 servings of vegetables per day.  The perfect diabetic snack list can have apples, bananas, grapes, peaches, cauliflower, carrots, celery, and broccoli, among others.
  • Diabetics must consume low fat dairy products which can be good sources of protein, calcium, vitamins, and minerals.  At the very least, one must have 2 to 3 servings of low fat milk, cheese, yogurt, or pudding snacks which are sugar-free.
  • The ADA suggests that diabetics eat 4 to 6 ounces of lean meat.  The protein-rich foods that can be included in diabetic snacks are fish, chicken, beef, eggs, tofu, beans, and other meat substitutes.
  • Diabetics can have fat but in moderation.  Once in a while, people with this disease can give in to their sinful cravings.  Desserts and sweets can be considered special treats but the portion size must be monitored.
  • When you plan your snack, you have to choose a variety or combination of healthy foods so you can still enjoy your meals.  You can have rice cakes with low-fat cream cheese toppings, yogurt with nuts and raisins, slices of apples with pretzels, canned fruit in light syrup with cinnamon and dried cranberries,  or a blend of fruit juice and yogurt.
